Associated Entity / Individual
An associated entity or individual is a person or organization connected to a school’s athletics program, a booster, a collective, a closely tied business, a significant donor. The term replaced “booster” as the operative concept under the House settlement, and payments from these parties receive the closest scrutiny of any NIL arrangement.
Q. How is this different from a booster?
It is broader. It covers organizations as well as individuals, and explicitly includes collectives, which the old booster rules were never written to address.
Q. Who counts as one?
Someone who has donated to the athletics program, holds an ownership interest in an entity that has, or otherwise acts in a way closely identified with the school’s athletics interests.
Q. What can they pay an athlete?
They can enter NIL agreements, but those deals face heightened review: they must serve a valid business purpose, fall within a reasonable range of compensation, and be submitted to NIL Go.
Q. Why the extra scrutiny?
Because a payment from a party connected to the school is the most likely route around the revenue-sharing cap. The rules start from the assumption that these deals need checking.
Q. Are collectives associated entities?
Generally yes, and that is the single biggest practical change from the old booster rules.
