Designated Student-Athlete
A designated student-athlete, or DSA, is an athlete who lost or would have lost a roster spot because of the new roster limits, and who is therefore exempt from counting toward those limits. The status was created to protect athletes displaced by the House settlement’s transition.
Q. Who qualifies?
Athletes on a Division I roster in 2024-25 who faced removal due to roster limits, and incoming 2025-26 freshmen whose spots were cut for the same reason. The qualifying cutoff date was April 7, 2025.
Q. How long does the status last?
For the duration of the athlete’s remaining eligibility.
Q. Does it transfer with the athlete?
Yes. DSA status travels, so an athlete remains exempt from roster limits at a new school. That portability was deliberate, to avoid trapping displaced athletes at one institution.
Q. How were designated student-athletes identified?
Schools submitted lists to the NCAA and class counsel by July 6, 2025, and were required to prepare them in good faith rather than excluding qualifying athletes at will.
Q. What if an athlete was left off the list?
They can dispute the decision through class counsel. The process was built with judicial oversight because the judge pushed back hard on roster limits during settlement approval.
