Squad List

A squad list is the official roster document a school maintains for each sport, recording every athlete, their eligibility status and the financial aid they receive. It is the primary compliance record for verifying that a team is within its limits and that everyone competing is eligible.

Q. What goes on it?

Every athlete on the team, their eligibility status and year, the athletic aid they receive, and, increasingly, their revenue-sharing status. It must be signed and dated before the first competition.

Q. Why does it matter?

It is the document enforcement bodies look at first. An athlete competing while not properly listed is one of the most common and most avoidable violations.

Q. What changed with roster limits?

The squad list is now how roster limit compliance is demonstrated. It also has to account for designated student-athletes, who are exempt from counting toward the limit.

Q. How often is it updated?

Continuously through the season as athletes join, leave or change status, with a signed version required before the first date of competition. Keeping it current is a persistent administrative burden.
