Transfer Window
A transfer window is the defined period during which an athlete may enter the transfer portal. Outside the window, entry generally requires a waiver. Windows differ by sport and have changed almost every year, so the current calendar always needs checking.
Q. When are the windows?
Football moved to a single January window beginning in 2026, replacing the previous December and spring windows. Basketball uses a 30-day window opening after the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Other sports have their own dates.
Q. Why did football consolidate to one window?
The December window overlapped the College Football Playoff and signing period, creating chaos for teams still competing. A single January window was intended to separate roster movement from postseason play.
Q. Are there exceptions?
Yes. A head coaching change typically triggers a separate window for that team’s athletes, and waivers exist for specific circumstances.
Q. What happens if an athlete misses the window?
They generally must wait for the next one or seek a waiver. Entering the portal is a notification with real consequences, the current school is not obliged to hold the roster spot.
